AVO Launches Global Secondary Marketplace Coalition, Invites Stakeholder Participation

Conceived as a multi-national alliance of industry stakeholders, the GSMC mandate will be to create best practices, review current licensing requirements and establish a code of ethical and responsible conduct for secondary market service providers doing business in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Orlando, Florida - March 17, 2018 - Association of Vacation Owners – AVO (formerly NTOA) is proud to announce the launch of the Global Secondary Market Coalition (GSMC) and welcomes industry trade associations in North America, along with leading vacation ownership companies to participate in this joint initiative.

Conceived as a multi-national alliance of industry stakeholders, the GSMC mandate will be to create best practices, review current licensing requirements and establish a code of ethical and responsible conduct for secondary market service providers doing business in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

AVO has been conducting in-depth studies of timeshare owner sentiment and the industry’s online reputation for several years. The group has determined that the lack of a structured secondary market for timeshares and vacation intervals is a problem that continues to negatively impact consumers and the vacation ownership industry.

“We must act now to protect consumers by establishing a universal accreditation process that upholds good and reasonable business standards. We expect this diverse work group to dedicate the practical resources needed to develop an operable framework for trustworthy participants”, said Gregory Crist, CEO of the AVO.

“To open the coalition, we are pleased to welcome the Cooperative Association of Resort Exchangers (C.A.R.E.) as the first major industry association to officially join the GSMC”, Crist continued. Membership within this association is comprised of timeshare developers, exchange companies, management firms, resale companies and other secondary market service providers including finance companies who specialize in resales.

C.A.R.E.’s President, Linda Mayhugh stated that, “C.A.R.E. member companies (and their customers) are being affected daily with secondary market activity and/or participating in it directly. Therefore, while we will strongly encourage our members to accredit themselves through the GSMC, it is our intention to seek inclusion of the GSMC best practices derived from this initiative into our C.A.R.E. Code of Standards and Ethics. The best way to fulfill this goal is to participate as a stakeholder and collectively support the AVO and GSMC.”

C.A.R.E and AVO are completely united in this initiative and to work together to assist in reducing consumer complaints which is once again rising and gaining continued scrutiny by regulatory agencies. There is an ongoing need to maintain the public trust and the AVO is encouraging leaders within the timeshare community to participate in the GSMC.
