The Koshand Opportunity Scholarship 2018-19 Awardees Named

Scholarships awarded for technical certification programs for South Hayward residents



HAYWARD, Calif. - December 18, 2018 - (Newswire.com)

​The newly launched Koshland Opportunity Scholarship by the JTHT Koshland Fellows celebrated 12 South Hayward residents receiving scholarships on Saturday, Dec. 15. The Koshland Opportunity Scholarship granted their first round of funding this year, awarding $55,000 in scholarships. Scholarship recipients are residents of the Jackson Triangle and Harder Tennyson (JTHT) neighborhoods in South Hayward and are pursuing certificates in technology, green energy, skilled trades or health care from Chabot College, Eden Area ROP or CSU East Bay Continuing Education.

The scholarship program was created by the JTHT Koshland Fellows – a group of community advocates, parents, and educators in South Hayward – with a grant from the San Francisco Foundation. They are excited to award scholarships to:

Cynthia Aguirre - Medical Assisting Program, Eden Area ROP

Daisy Carrasco - Medical Assisting Program, Eden Area ROP

Diana Fajardo - Medical Assisting Program, Eden Area ROP

Maria Guzman - Medical Assisting Program, Eden Area ROP

Carlos A Ventura Ramirez - Industrial Electrical Program, Eden Area ROP

Laura Parra - Certificate in Pharmacy Technician, CSU East Bay Continuing Education

Marcia Lopez - Certificate Pharmacy Technician, CSU East Bay Continuing Education

Thomas Sevilla - Bachelors of Science in Nursing, CSU East Bay

Karen Alvarez - Early Childhood Development Certificate of Proficiency, Chabot College

Deivy Flores Guardado - Information Technology Support Entrepreneur Certificate of Achievement, Chabot College

Jonathan Cervera - Firefighter 1 Certificate: Fire Technology CA & Fire Prevention Inspector CA, Chabot College

Kelly Lucas - Small Business Management Certificate of Achievement, Chabot College

Each recipient receives full funding for one year of tuition and fees as well as a small stipend to cover uniforms, books and transportation. The Fellows’ goal is to remove a financial barrier for South Hayward residents seeking new skills, certifications, and pathways to sustainable careers.

Emily Chow, a Koshland Fellow and Hayward resident said, “With this scholarship we hope to close the income gap that affects our most vulnerable residents in Hayward -- including older workers, undocumented residents, and folks who could not afford to take classes due to financial and time constraints. We are excited to award this first round of scholarships.”

Hayward High School Guidance Counselor Molly Garahan shared, “So many people are excited about this scholarship. I review a lot of scholarships and it is very evident that this scholarship program was created here in Hayward, with our community’s needs in mind.”
