Healing Artist Leyla talks about her new kind of music called the ‘Yoga Pop’

Leyla is a New York-based singer and composer originally from Switzerland. She has a background in various healing modalities such as Sound Healing, Reiki and Kundalini Yoga as well as in Musical Theatre and has pioneered a new brand called ‘Yoga Pop’ that combines healing elements with traditional Pop music.

What makes your music special?

I call my music ‘Yoga Pop’ or ‘restorative Pop’ which is conscious music that involves using special sound healing elements combined with classic Pop songwriting to intentionally create ’healing’ Pop music. Sound Healing uses elements of vibration, frequency, sound, toning, chanting, song and music to create shifts in the body, mind, and spirit. I want to convey a positive, hopeful and uplifting message for the listener and/or create a story within the song that takes the listener on a journey of transformation. I believe in love, compassion, unity, and equality, which are the core elements of my music. I also write the music to help to tune in with the chakras. The seven chakras are energy centers in our bodies where energy flows through. Blocked energy can often lead to illness, so it is important to understand what each chakra represents and what we can do to keep this energy flowing freely. My ‘Legion Of Light’ single was specifically focused on the crown chakra which is located at the top of the head. It is the highest chakra and represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually. This energy center is associated with the element of thought, connection to spirit, universal consciousness, enlightenment, wisdom, unity, and self-knowledge. It is also connected to the element of light and it is associated with several organs and glands within the body, including the brain, the hand, the nervous system, and the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body which produces many hormones that travel throughout the body.

What is the meaning of your Legion Of Light song?

Legion is a call to action to remember who we are and tap into our truth. It’s about realizing that we have the power for change inside of us and that we need to believe in ourselves, but also to reclaim our spiritual power. It is often when we have no choice but to be strong, that we discover our own strength. The song is written to align with the crown chakra.

Are you planning on any collaborations?

Currently, I am collaborating with Hannah Ezzell on the creation of a workshop called ‘Find Your Voice’. Hannah Ezzell is a storyteller, filmmaker, poet, teaching artist and photographer. Through storytelling, meditation, and song, ‘Find Your Voice,’ allows participants to connect with their individuality and authenticity, and to bring this into the world through creativity and expression. It is unique in its fusion of meditation, art, and performance designed to bring music back to its healing roots and to empower self-expression through song. In ‘Find Your Voice,’ singing and speaking your truth is seen as a birthright, an innately. Singing helps us feel alive. Storytelling helps us feel heard. Bringing song and storytelling intentionally and meaningfully into people’s lives uplifts, encourages, and empowers individuals, who are then able to uplift, encourage, and empower other individuals within their own communities. Human experience that builds community, honors life, and encourages inner and outer transformation.

Tell me about your favorite performance venues?

There are many, but being based in New York City I have performed at many venues such as The Bitter End, Cafe Wha?, Mercury Lounge The Cutting Room, Pianos and the Triad Theatre, to name a few.

What is your message for the fans around the globe?

To believe in themselves, their gifts, talent, and truth. There is unique light within all of us and I hope to inspire people to embrace who they are and to share their voice with the world. I believe that we can collectively transform the world for the better. It’s time to awaken to our own power, to unite and choose the light and the love.

One thing you want to change in this music industry?

My mission is to create Pop music that can still be commercial but is infused with sound healing elements and an intent to facilitate wellbeing and transformation. Music is a very powerful tool. I also would like to bring more awareness through music/events for the planet earth, global warming and the plastic use that is ending up in the ocean and is incredibly damaging to sea life. I think that as an artist we have to use our platform to raise global awareness.
