Health Insurance Enrollment Has Opened, Increasing the Need for Prescription Discount Programs like ScriptSave WellRx

TUCSON, Ariz. - November 11, 2019 - (Newswire.com)

Enrollment for health insurance began on Nov. 1, but many Americans will remain uninsured, increasing the need for prescription discount programs, like ScriptSave® WellRx.

The number of uninsured Americans is rising, according to the most recent report from the Census Bureau. In 2018, the number of people in the United States without health insurance rose to 27.5 million, up from 25.6 million in 2017. It was the first year-to-year increase in uninsured rates since 2008 and 2009.

ScriptSave WellRx’s long-standing mission has been to close the gaps in prescription coverage. The prescription discount program has helped more than half a million consumers, saving them more than $10 billion dollars on prescription costs.

COO for ScriptSave WellRx, Dr. Marcus Sredzinski, says their prescription discount program will benefit uninsured consumers, including those who are on Medicaid, Medicare, and traditional commercial insurance.

“Whether you or your family members have Medicaid, Medicare or traditional health insurance offered through an employer, there are going to be gaps in coverage,” said Dr. Sredzinski. “For instance, individuals on Medicaid often find their medications are not covered and must make a tough choice of paying out-of-pocket or not adhering to their doctors’ treatment plans. Commercial insurance programs have continued to increase their deductibles, now to the point that consumers rarely meet them. If this is the case midway through the year, it might just be more financially responsible to use a discount prescription program, like ScripSave WellRx, over your insurance. Regardless if you have excellent insurance or not, price comparing your medications brings an enormous value to consumers by allowing transparency into the healthcare industry.”

How ScriptSave WellRx Works With and Without Health Insurance

The open enrollment period for health insurance closes on Dec. 15, giving almost 28 million uninsured Americans limited time to find a plan that works for them.

The ScriptSave WellRx prescription discount program is not a health insurance policy and is not intended as a substitute for health insurance. The program allows consumers to obtain discounts on prescription drugs and/or pharmaceutical products purchased through participating pharmacies. Consumers pay lower than average retail prices for all prescription drugs at the time of purchase.

Consumers with health insurance coverage can still use their ScriptSave WellRx card for any prescriptions that are not covered by their insurance plan, or for family members not covered by insurance.

ScriptSave WellRx’s free savings cards and prescription coupons—which can be found online or in the mobile app—can help save patients up to 80 percent on their medications, with average savings of around 60 percent. In terms of dollars and cents, the average cash saved by patients using ScriptSave WellRx in 2018 was $30.85 per prescription.

Shawn Ohri, Vice President of Business Development for ScriptSave, says a recent report from the Kaiser Family Foundation also shows there is a real need for prescription discount programs that help Americans save money and stay healthy.

“The Kaiser Family Foundation reports the cost of family health coverage will hit a new record in 2020, exceeding $20,000,” said Ohri. “This increase will push a large number of American workers into plans that cover less or cost more – or force them to live without health insurance altogether.”

Open enrollment for 2020 runs from Nov. 1 to Dece. 15, 2019. Outside the Open Enrollment Period, consumers generally can enroll in a health insurance plan only if they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
