Mesa Public Library's Dobson Ranch Branch is Now a Certified Autism Center™

MESA, Ariz. - December 5, 2019 - (Newswire.com)

The Mesa Public Library's Dobson Ranch Branch is now a Certified Autism Center™, joining almost 60 organizations in and near Mesa, AZ, working toward a truly inclusive city for all.

Initiated by Visit Mesa, the movement toward inclusion for all residents and visitors, but particularly those with autism, has resulted in Mesa being designated as the first-ever Autism Certified City. As part of the CAC requirements, public-facing library staff completed training and certification in autism and sensory awareness to enhance their ability to deliver a positive experience for visiting families and individuals with sensory needs. The library is also currently developing calming kits and a spectrum storytime to be introduced in early 2020.

“At Mesa Public Library, we value hospitality and demonstrate that value by providing safe and inclusive spaces for all to freely learn and grow. For us, participating in the training from IBCCES and receiving certification aligned perfectly with our organizational values and will allow us to better serve our community.” – Heather Wolf, Director, Mesa Public Library.

Many individuals and families with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory sensitivities can find it challenging to enjoy community spaces, activities, and events due to a lack of accommodation, trained staff, or clear information on what visitors can expect. As a leader for 20 years in training and certification for healthcare, corporate, and education professionals around the globe, IBCCES recognized the need for more welcoming spaces in the community, whether it be a museum, library, or public park, and created programs for to meet those needs. IBCCES provides evidence-based training and certification programs created in conjunction with clinical experts and individuals with autism in order to provide professionals serving individuals with cognitive disorders a better understanding of best practices when working with a neurodiverse population.

“IBCCES is excited to partner with the staff at Dobson Ranch Library. This designation shows their commitment to serving all individuals and to enhance visitors with autism or sensory needs experiences,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman.

IBCCES also created CertifiedAutismCenter.com, as a free online resource for parents that lists certified locations around the globe. Each organization listed on the site has met Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) requirements.
