Contemporary Pediatrics® Unveils Results of Annual Issues and Attitudes Survey

Contemporary Pediatrics®, a trusted multimedia platform featuring clinical articles, case studies and practice management tips for pediatricians and other pediatric health care providers, recently revealed the first round of results from the seventh annual Issues and Attitudes Survey.

Since its inception in 2013, the yearly survey has shined a light on pediatricians’ major areas of concern and optimism within the field. Questions gauge their attitudes and opinions on a wide range of topics, from perceived obstacles in providing quality patient care to stressors in everyday practice to overall job satisfaction.

With the challenges and stressors of pediatricians remaining widespread, nearly 70% of respondents agreed that their stress levels have increased along with their workload this year. Common stressors include an increase in administrative workloads (27%); the adoption of burdensome technology (20%); and managing a higher patient volume (11%).

When looking ahead, the majority of pediatricians predicted an increased throughput pressure—the need to see more patients for briefer periods of time, as mandated by insurance companies for receiving reimbursement—as the biggest challenge in 2020.

“Pediatricians are struggling today more than ever before to provide quality care to children while facing mounting governmental and insurance mandates to cut costs and limit time with patients, which conflicts with their very nature of compassion and empathy for patients and their parents or caregivers,” said Catherine M. Radwan, managing editor of Contemporary Pediatrics®. “Our surveys over the last seven years clearly show that the problems facing pediatricians are increasing their stress levels personally and professionally, while putting children at risk of losing the level of care they need to grow and maintain optimum health and well-being.”

Despite the clear challenges, 58% of participants said they’d pick pediatrics again if given the chance to restart their medical career, a positive sign for the profession.
