GlobalEcon Opens in Shanghai, Expands Business in Greater China

Global Economics Group (GlobalEcon) has opened its second office in China. GlobalEcon established its Shanghai office on January 2, 2020 in response to growing demand for economic and management consulting services in Greater China. GlobalEcon also has an office in Beijing. Since its entry in 2011, GlobalEcon has expanded its team at a fast pace along with the development of competition policy in China. The Greater China team is made up of leading economic experts, senior economists and consultants, professional associates and managers. Its Greater China Business is led by Dr. Vanessa Yanhua Zhang.

According to GlobalEcon Chairman David S. Evans, “Thanks to the courts and agencies, China has made tremendous progress in embracing sophisticated economic analysis since the enactment of the Anti-Monopoly Law in 2008. GlobalEcon is proud to have been part of these efforts and is looking forward to the further growth of antitrust enforcement in China.”

GlobalEcon has played a leading role in the significant antitrust cases and IPR litigations in China. Dr. Zhang, along with GlobalEcon’s Chairman David S. Evans, served as economic experts on behalf of Tencent in Qihoo 360 v. Tencent, the first antitrust case decided by the Supreme People’s Court of China, in first and second trials. They have also worked on other significant agency investigations, mergers, and private litigation.

The new Shanghai office continues GlobalEcon’s international expansion providing economic analysis for high profile antitrust and regulatory matters and IPR litigations.

Dr. Vanessa Yanhua Zhang, who has led GlobalEcon’s Greater China practice since its founding, has extensive experience testifying at the courts in China. Dr. Zhang holds a Ph.D. from Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) and is also a Senior Researcher at MRLC of Renmin University of China. She has worked on a wide range of high-profile M&As, agency investigations and litigation matters related to antitrust and IPR issues in Greater China, the U.S. and the E.U. She has submitted expert reports before the Supreme People’s Court of China, Guangdong High People’s Court, Beijing High People’s Court, SAMR, NDRC, and MOFCOM.

GlobalEcon has recruited a high-powered team of economists under Dr. Zhang’s leadership. The Greater China team consists of more than a dozen senior economists, consultants and managers, 80 percent of whom hold Ph.D. degrees from U.S. or E.U. universities. In addition, all the managers possess extensive work experience at big-four accounting firms, multinational law firms, and/or MNCs.

Dr. John Jiong Gong is one of the leading antitrust authorities and expert witnesses in China. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and is now a Professor of Economics at the University of International Business and Economics. Dr. Gong has extensive experience in antitrust and competition policy and has advised to SAMR, MOFCOM and World Bank Group on relevant issues.

Both Professor Zonglai Kou (Fudan University) and Professor Hongjun Zhong (Shanghai University of Finance and Economics) have joined the team as economic experts on antitrust and IPR matters. Professor Kou has extensive research and public policy experience in IPR, innovation and industrial organization. Professor Zhong holds a Ph.D. from Oxford University and has extensive consulting experience in innovation and firm strategies.

The Greater China team is engaged in services of a broad range of competition and regulation issues, including merger analysis, antitrust & intellectual property, abuse of dominance/monopolization and cartels & collusion, financial regulation, public utilities regulation, etc. GlobalEcon offers the benefits of a multilingual team, knowledgeable in English and Mandarin, who can effectively communicate complex technical results in a clear and concise manner.
