NeuroHeroes Spreads Hope Amidst COVID-19 Through Meals Delivered to Neuro-ICU Staff

MINNEAPOLIS - April 30, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology a group of young Neuroscience doctors created NeuroHeroes, a fundraiser feeding and energizing the Neuroscience intensive care units (Neuro-ICUs) suddenly battling COVID-19.

Intensive care units across the nation are exceeding capacity with COVID-19 patients. Neuro-ICUs typically treat issues like stroke and traumatic brain injuries. Now they have stepped up to treat COVID-19 patients in need of critical care. This pivot exposes these medical professionals and support staff to a much higher level of personal risk and puts them squarely in the middle of the most challenging medical crisis in a generation.

Ruchira M. Jha, MD, assistant professor of critical care medicine, neurology and neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) department of critical care medicine, was inspired to launch NeuroHeroes in a WhatsApp chat group of female neurointensivists discussing ways they could show support for the peers across the country.

Within hours, a core team of neurocritical care clinicians and AAN members formed. This group included: Ohio Health's Asma M. Moheet, MD; Wake Forest Baptist Health's Aarti Sarwal, MD, FAAN; UPMC neuroendovascular surgery fellow, Jaydevsinh Dolia, MD; UPMC neurology resident Devin J.  Burke, MD; along with UPMC Neuro-ICU nurse, Danielle Thomas, RN.

Through a grassroots push using personal contacts on social media, NeuroHeroes collected over $10,000 in 24 hours on their GoFundMe page, smashing their initial goal of $1,000.

NeuroHeroes started delivering meals to neuro-ICUs in New York City—New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and NYU Langone Medical Center. To date, NeuroHeroes has provided 43 meals to over 25 different neuro-ICUs from coast to coast

NeuroHeroes continues to expand to COVID-19 hotspots around the country, reaching places like Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Miami. The teams that received these meals sent videos and photos showing their joy and gratitude. Their appreciation was awe-inspiring, and that continues to fuel and motivate this campaign.

Given the exponential growth of this fundraiser, NeuroHeroes partnered with the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) for operational support, and transitioned to a new SVIN fundraising page.

NeuroHeroes is also endorsed by the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS), @YoungNIR, and The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation (TAAF).
