In-home Learning Expertise, Tools, and Support Accelerates Children's Learning

OAKLAND, Calif. - Oct. 12, 2022 - PRLog -- Family engagement is crucial to accelerating children's learning. Families in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) will now have access to additional, vital resources to enable their children to overcome two years of COVID-related learning loss. Oakland-based nonprofit Children Rising, which already has 20 years of experience with one-on-one literacy and math tutoring, will launch FamilyBridge this month. Families in their one-on-one tutoring programs will benefit from in-home learning expertise, tools, and support to confidently nurture and advocate for their child's academic growth.

The National Institute of Health's /National Center for Biotechnology Information stated, "Parent involvement in a child's education is consistently found to be positively associated with a child's academic performance." FamilyBridge will empower parents and caregivers in our public schools most affected by educational inequity and amplify the impact of our proven Succeeding by Reading and Path2Math tutoring programs.

"The children are struggling with reading and math more than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We designed FamilyBridge to bridge the gap between a child's academic learning in school and supportive learning at home," says Jim Wambach, executive director of Children Rising.

Founded in 2001, Children Rising's one-on-one tutoring programs, Succeeding by Reading and Path2Math, deliver high dosage tutoring to children in Oakland's most underserved communities at no cost to their families. FamilyBridge will create meaningful partnerships with families so they may further develop the skills, confidence, and tools needed to accelerate their child's learning and advocate for their vision of their child's academic growth.

Tai Dillard joined Children Rising as FamilyBridge program director. She brings over 12 years of experience advocating for families and children to the Oakland community. "FamilyBridge celebrates the uniqueness and resilience of each family, of which the child is an extension. I delight in the activation of potential as children gain confidence in literacy and numeracy and aspire to academic goals that once seemed elusive," she said.

The Ahlsten Foundation, a longtime funding partner to Children Rising,  provided critical seed funding for Family Bridge.

"We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the Ahlsten Foundation and their vision for empowering children and families in our community schools," said Wambach. "Their ongoing support of Children Rising programs aligns with our goal of empowering communities by empowering children to rise above the challenges they face in school and life."

Children Rising will partner with teachers at the schools they currently serve. The initial cohort of families will be invited to join the program beginning  October 4th, 2022. FamilyBridge will provide families access to advanced in-home learning tools and support specifically designed for elementary school students. With additional resources, children will achieve accelerated, predictable growth in literacy and numeracy skills. Parents and caregivers will develop increased confidence and the ability to provide academic support to their children at home. The confidence boost for young learners will result in lasting, improved outcomes for post-elementary education learning.
