Galleria Camaya marked its return to the prestigious Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (HKVAC) in Central last Wednesday with an elegant opening ceremony celebrating contemporary Philippine art. The event, which coincides with Philippine National Arts Month, drew a distinguished crowd of art enthusiasts, collectors, and key officials from the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong.
Among the honorary guests were the new Labor Attaché, Atty. Cesar L. Chavez, Jr., alongside Consul Von Ryan S. Ferrera and Vice Consul Allan G. Revote, representing the Consulate’s economic and cultural sections. The exhibition serves as a powerful showcase of Filipino artistic excellence, headlined by two artists making their Hong Kong solo debuts. Loida Unciangco Bernardo presents serenely atmospheric rural landscapes that capture the pastoral essence of the Philippine countryside. In contrast, Marius Cornelius “Marius Black” Funtilar, a Filipino Ukiyo-e master, displays dynamic mixed-media works that masterfully bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary Filipino sensibilities.

A significant highlight of the show is the latest collection from Guhit Kulay, a prolific art collective that has become a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s Filipino creative community. Founded in 2017 by artists Marilyn Lopez, Noemi Manguerra, and Cristina Cayat, the group’s name translates to “stroke of color” in Tagalog. Guhit Kulay provides a unique platform where veteran artists volunteer their time to mentor emerging enthusiasts, many of whom are overseas Filipino workers.
The exhibition also features new works from the gallery’s leadership and local talent. Gallery owner and artist Abigail Camaya Hills unveiled a series of delicate porcelain paintings, while co-curator and Hong Kong-based artist Rodolfo Canete presented his recent explorations in acrylic and ink.
Since its inception, Galleria Camaya has built a reputation as a premier gateway for both award-winning masters and rising stars. By staging exhibitions in major global hubs including the United States, Vienna, and Hong Kong, the gallery continues to champion Filipino talent on the international stage, connecting local artists with a diverse global audience.
