Kajy Law CEO Shares Winter Crash Safety Guidance for Michigan Drivers

Detroit, Michigan – As snow and ice increase crash risks across Southeast Michigan, Lawrence Kajy, CEO of Kajy Law Firm, is urging drivers to focus on safety, documentation, and medical care in the critical minutes following a winter collision. Kajy says these early decisions can impact both long term health and insurance outcomes.

Kajy shared this guidance during a recent appearance on Live in the D, emphasizing that the moments immediately after a crash are especially dangerous during Michigan winters.

“The first thing that you need to do is make sure that everyone’s safe,” Kajy said. “Then you need to get out of harm’s way. This is particularly important in Michigan in wintertime because secondary accidents are so much more common.”

Once vehicles are moved to a safe location, Kajy advises drivers to contact police to formally document the incident. “Make sure they come out so they can do a report, gather all the information, and that way you have the other driver’s information, their insurance, everything that you need,” he said.

Kajy also warned that cold weather and adrenaline can delay symptoms of serious injuries. “In the winter, adrenaline and cold weather can sometimes mask some injuries that you have, especially to the back and neck,” he said. “You want to make sure you get medical treatment and get checked out if you need to.”

From an insurance standpoint, Kajy said legal guidance can be critical when claims are delayed or denied. “If an insurance company tries to refuse to pay, you need to call a lawyer immediately,” he said. “They will try to find any reason not to pay. At my firm in particular, we are over 90 percent successful when an insurance company refuses to pay. When clients sign up with us, we get them to pay.”

Addressing hit and run crashes, Kajy cautioned drivers against pursuing fleeing vehicles. “Do not chase the other driver,” he said. “Pull over to the side of the road, call the police, and try to remember as much information as you can. That includes the car make, model, color, and possibly a description of the other driver. If you are able, try to remember the license plate.”

Beyond crash response, Kajy highlighted prevention efforts through the Kajy Law Drivers Education Scholarship Fund, created in partnership with Motor City Driving Academy. The program provides weekly driver education scholarships for teens.

“To me, this is the first step in making the community safer,” Kajy said. “This is the first time young drivers are learning how to drive and what to do and what not to do. It is important not to pick up bad habits early because those habits can stay with you for the rest of your life.”
