ReefCircular’s Artificial Reefs Set to Transform Coastal Ecosystems

Live on Kickstarter, ReefCircular is developing a shell-based bioconcrete that can be 3d-printed and cast into reefs, to restore marine habitats.

-- ReefCircular, a groundbreaking company dedicated to restoring marine ecosystems, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raising funds to bring its innovative reef deployment project to life.

With climate change and human activity accelerating the decline of marine habitats, coral reefs around the world are at risk of disappearing. ReefCircular is on a mission to reverse this trend by creating circular, artificial reefs made from biobased and environmentally friendly materials. These reefs provide a foundation for marine life to regenerate and thrive, restoring biodiversity and protecting coastlines.

“When creating the different reef products at ReefCircular, we were inspired by nature. Many times, oyster and mussel reefs will use shells from the same species as the base for their growth,” says CEO and Arkitekt MAA Kathryn Larsen. “In the last two years, we’ve developed an in-house bioconcrete, called Aegironite®, from fishery shell waste and natural marine binders – and designed different biomimetic reefs targeted towards different species, to restore natural habitats and improve ocean biodiversity.”

ReefCircular’s Key Features:

  • Circular Materials — Made from marine-safe, upcycled materials that integrate seamlessly into ocean ecosystems.
  • Modular & Scalable — Designed to be easily deployed in a variety of marine environments to maximize impact.
  • Biodiversity Support — Encourages coral growth, provides shelter for marine species, and enhances local fish populations.
  • Community-Driven — Works with coastal communities, scientists, and divers to ensure reefs are placed where they are needed most.
  • Long-Term Ocean Health — Aims to create circular ecosystems that contribute to marine resilience against climate change.

This March, ReefCircular is deploying 15 artificial OysterReefs in Loch Craignish in the Scottish Highlands in their very own bioconcrete made of waste shells and natural marine binders with European flat oyster juveniles attached - and over 50 kelp tiles seeded with sugar kelp. This important work is being done in collaboration with Seawilding, The Kelp Conservation Initiative, Anemo Robotics, and supported by Marine Fund Scotland, The Fishmongers' Company and with the launch of the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign— generous donors around the world.

“Marine biodiversity is rapidly declining due to human activity e.g. habitat destruction, global warming, overfishing and pollution. 85% of oyster reefs and 50% of coral reefs have disappeared globally. As marine biodiversity declines, so too do the socio-economic benefits healthy marine ecosystems provide e.g. coastal protection, food security, and employment. For example, it is estimated that coral reefs alone, which cover less than 1% of the seafloor, contribute USD 375 billion to the global economy each year through goods and services,” adds Larsen. “Every little bit you pledge helps us, which means we can help the ocean more.”

About ReefCircular

ReefCircular ApS turns shell waste into sea life, by 3d-printing and casting reefs to restore degraded marine ecosystems and increase marine biodiversity. Founded in Autumn 2022 in the basement kitchenette of a Copenhagen clothing store, today ReefCircular works out of Copenhagen Labs in Symbion as the first artificial reef company based in Denmark.
