-- Newman University's Radiologic Technology program continues to set the standard for healthcare education excellence in Kansas with its recently renovated digital imaging laboratory, impressive 99% job placement rate, and innovative approach to preparing skilled professionals for the healthcare workforce.
The 22-month program, which leads to an Associate of Science in Health Science with a concentration in Radiologic Technology, has been fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and recently received an eight-year accreditation renewal, demonstrating the program's commitment to educational excellence.
"Our program is designed to mirror the real-world environment our graduates will encounter in their careers," said Jeffery Vaughn, Program Director. "With our newly renovated lab facilities, students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge digital equipment that prepares them for immediate success upon graduation."
The state-of-the-art laboratory renovation was made possible through Newman University's successful "Facing Forward" campaign, which provided funding to update Eck Hall with modern facilities. The campaign transformed the program's outdated film X-ray equipment into a fully digital learning environment featuring the latest technology used in healthcare settings today.
Student Cutberto Pimentel-Rodriguez describes the program's practical approach: "The Radiologic Program is set up much like on-the-job training. By graduation, we already have experience with different brands of instruments and machines, which we can highlight on our resumes."
This hands-on experience is a key factor in the program's exceptional 99% job placement rate. Graduates enter a field where the annual wage in Kansas has increased over the past six years. According to Zip Recruiter, the current average salary for Rad Tech professionals is $85,527 in Kansas and $95,899 nationally. Specifically in Wichita, the average income is slightly below the national mark at $94,663.
Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes compassionate patient care and community service. Throughout the 22-month curriculum, students complete a minimum of eight hours of community service and participate in the program's service-learning project, which includes hosting an annual campus blood drive for the American Red Cross.
"We're not just training technicians; we're developing healthcare professionals with a commitment to service," explains Vaughn. "Our graduates are transforming society both through their technical expertise and their dedication to patient care."
The versatility of the degree is another advantage highlighted by current students. According to student Arturo Tena, "Being in the Radiologic Technology program isn't only limited to just X-ray. You can go into CT, MRI, interventional, vascular—whatever the case may be. You're going to learn every single day. It's not a career where you're stagnant."
The program's structure combines classroom theory with clinical rotations, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real healthcare settings. This approach ensures graduates are fully prepared for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination and immediate entry into the workforce.
Newman's radiologic technology curriculum includes comprehensive coursework in:
Radiologic Positioning
Radiologic Pathology
Radiologic Physics
Radiation Protection
Patient Care and Management
As healthcare facilities nationwide face staffing challenges, Newman University's program plays a crucial role in addressing the need for qualified radiologic technologists in Kansas and beyond. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continued demand for these professionals, with radiologic technologists in Kansas' healthcare facilities, doctors' offices, and hospitals being particularly valued.
Newman University's radiologic technology program exemplifies the university's mission of "empowering people to change the world" by preparing graduates who are not only technically proficient but also professionally responsible and committed to compassionate patient care.
