Long Beach Shipping Store Discusses Details of Reintroduced Bill That Affects the USPS

FedEx Package Drop-Off Center in Long Beach, CA

Long Beach, Calif. — Recently, a significant number of mail carriers experienced heat-related illnesses. As a result, it was announced that the Peggy Memorial Act is going to be reintroduced. To ensure that their customers are kept up-to-date, Shore Business Center, a FedEx package drop-off center, explains more about this important announcement.

In 2019, lawmakers introduced the Peggy Frank Memorial Act after a mail carrier in her early 60s died inside her truck during a heatwave in Woodland Hills. The woman was found to have succumbed to hyperthermia, but other contributory factors may have included heart disease and obesity.

If the woman's truck had air conditioning and other resources, her death could have been prevented, as Rep. Tony Cardenas explained when he reintroduced the bill to Congress. “We can’t bring her back, but we can do everything we can to protect the men and women who keep us connected by delivering letters, packages, prescriptions and so much more. It’s time to bring their vehicles to the 21st century by including climate controls that will protect them from extreme temperatures. We owe it to Peggy, her family and all postal workers to make sure civil servants stay healthy and safe. It’s the bare minimum.”

If this bill is passed, all USPS vehicles will need to have air conditioning installed within three years— a considerable undertaking. However, it is important, as around 70 percent of the USPS vehicles do not contain air conditioning units at present.
