Contractors, including subcontractors, specialty contractors, and persons engaged in the business of home improvement must be licensed before submitting bids. Licenses may be issued to individuals, partnerships, corporations, joint ventures, and limited liability companies.”
Only those who will be doing minor work, such as a project for which the total cost of labor, materials, and other expenses on one or more contracts is under $500, are exempted from having license. And it is important to note that it is not allowable to subdivide a large project in such as way that the project costs will be less than $500 as a way to avoid the license requirement. Also, unlicensed contractors will need to provide the purchaser with a written disclosure in the B&P Code section 7048 to indicate that they don’t have a license from the CSLB, or else they will be disqualified from using the $500 exemption.
The California contractor license exam that is administered by the CSLB is challenging, which is why most people will require some help or study material to pass the test. This license exam is made up of two parts. The first part is the standard Law and Business exam and all qualifying individuals will need to pass this test. The second test is focused on the specific trade or certification area of which the applicant is interested to be licensed. But those who are applying for the C-61 Limited Specialty Classification are exempted from taking the second test because there is no trade test for this classification.
The exams will be in multiple-choice format and there will be no writing. The law test will be made up of around 125 questions while the trade test will vary in length, depending on the classification. On average, the trade exam will have 80 to 125 questions. Candidates will have to answer at least 73 percent of the questions to pass the law exam. For each trade exam, the candidates will be informed about the exact percentage of correct answers required to pass the test.
