South Los Angeles Apartment Complex Tenants Report Mold, Sewer Gas and Other Poor Housing Conditions

By: WebWire

Multiple media outlets recently published stories about tenant complaints at a large South Los Angeles apartment complex. According to the reports, which included multiple interviews, tenants have raised concerns about water leaks, mold growth, sewer gas, bed bugs, cockroaches and other living condition issues with property management that they claim have not been properly addressed.

Mold is an all too common problem in many aging apartment complexes and it doesn't take long for a mold problem to begin once moisture is introduced. Mold will begin to grow if water damage or elevated levels of humidity are not addressed quickly. In fact, mold will begin to grow in most cases in as short as 48 hours on many damp building materials, furnishing and personal belongings.

“Exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause allergies and act as a respiratory irritant,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “For some asthmatics, exposure could trigger an asthma attack. Breathing high levels of mold can also exacerbate other respiratory conditions, such as COPD. For people with a weakened or suppressed immune system, some types of mold associated with water damaged buildings can even cause opportunistic infections.”

Helping property managers, tenants and homeowners identify concerns associated with water damage, mold, sewer gas, bed bugs, cockroach allergens and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) concerns are the laboratory testing experts at LA Testing. With multiple California facilities, LA Testing provides laboratory services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and building inspection tools.  LA Testing even sponsored an educational video about apartments, mold and indoor air quality several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/AFjuj-Asb5I
