For a seasoned Pokémon collector, new expansion packs like these mean all-new cards to collect and flip. But, for newer collectors, figuring out which cards to invest in can be a bit tricky.

To help you out, we’ve put together a quick guide to give you’ll all the information you need to start collecting cards from the Pokémon Chilling Reign deck. If you’re looking to grow your Pokémon collection and get your hands on that Gold Secret Rare Snorlax, keep reading.

THE CHILLING REIGN EXPANSION

Chilling Reign is the newest expansion to the Sword and Shield series. If you’re a true Pokémon fan, you probably remember when Sword and Shield was first released back in 2019. All of the new trainers, Pokémon, and energy cards opened up an exciting new arena for collectors, traders, and players alike.

The Chilling Reign expansion pack is no different. The release of this deck introduced fans to new Pokémon from the Galar region, additional Battle Styles, new Legendaries, and so much more.

The expansion offers a variety of pack sizes. Collector’s boxes typically include at least one promoted card, a handful of booster packs, and other goodies. For a pricier package that comes with even more items, check out the Elite Trainer Boxes.

The Elite Trainer Boxes come in two variants: Shadow Rider Calyrex and Ice Rider Calyrex. These boxes feature the Crown Tundra’s Legendary Pokémon Calyrex who once ruled the ancient Galar. They include 8 booster packs, 65 card sleeves, 45 Energy cards, and more.

They also have a Build and Battle Box that contains a 23 card evolution pack that includes key cards from prior expansions, 4 booster packs, and a tip sheet for deckbuilding. If you don’t need that many cards, the individual booster packs come with 1 basic Energy card, a code for Pokémon TCG Online, and 10 cards. Both of these packs are great for beginners looking to discover the thrill of collecting.

TYPES OF CARDS

No matter what pack (or packs) you decide to buy and tear open, you can expect the same types of cards found in other series and variants of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. These include Energy, Trainer, and Pokémon character cards.

In total, there are 233 cards to collect; 198 Normal and 35 Secret cards. To break this down further, there are 15 Pokémon V, 8 Pokémon VMAX, 25 Trainer, and 3 Special Energy cards to look out for. A handful of these cards are worth a pretty penny and others pack a serious punch against your competitors.

The Chilling Reign Expansion features 15 new Pokémon V and 8 new VMAX cards. These cards are inspired by the Dynamax and Gigantimax battle mechanics featured in the Sword and Shield series. They are rare variations that have a higher HP and deal some serious damage on the playing field.

Playing with these cards requires a different strategy than regular gameplay. The evolution of the cards and rules for placing them on your playmat is quite different than in the traditional card game. If you play competitively, be sure to read up on the rules and requirements for playing with them before banking on their power.

ENERGY CARDS

While they aren’t as aesthetic as the Pokémon character and Trainer cards, they play a critical role in the dynamics of the game. Energy cards are the cards that power Pokémon attacks and allow you to beat your opponents!

HOW TO IDENTIFY RARE CARDS

Identifying rare Pokémon cards is easy. All cards come with a symbol that indicates how rare it is.

Common cards are marked with a black circle. These are the cards that often appear in decks and generally hold the least value.

Uncommon cards are marked with a black diamond. It’s not common for cards like these to hold much value, but every now and again, they’ll sell for a couple of bucks more than their common counterparts.

Rare cards will always have a black star. These are the cards you know are unique and worth a little money.

Rare cards are broken down into a few different subgroups. These are Regular Rare, Holofoil Rare, Ultra Rare, and Secret Rare. Within these groups, the cards are broken down further into art styles.

Pokémon uses Alternate Art (Alt-Art), Full Art, Gold, and Rainbow to classify the images on the cards.

Gold cards are pretty self-explanatory. These types of cards have the main Pokémon character, Trainer, or Item surrounded by gold accents.

Similarly, Rainbow cards color the characters or items rainbow. Virtually all Rainbow cards are valuable and are a great asset to your collection.

Full Art cards have the image fully printed on the card and are a little hard to read because of it. Alternate Art cards feature artwork that deviates from the standard art styles found in the Full Art cards. It can be hard to distinguish between the two at first but gets easier with a little practice.

Now that we’ve got that terminology cleared up, let’s get into the most valuable Secret Rare cards to date.
