What happens when you are told to take a backseat because of your disability? For most people, it takes courage and determination to prove their worth. For Nathan Downie, however, all he needed was his resilience and a blinding passion for the arts to be able to shine, and inspire others.
Nathan, a London-based artist who was diagnosed with autism at an early age, was told that he wouldn’t be able to achieve much in life due to his disability. What he heard was the complete opposite. He couldn’t sit on his incredible artistic capabilities and not act on them. Nathan is now a multidisciplinary artist, model, aspiring actor, and musician.
His storytelling artworks are primarily landscape, where he works in both pencil and oil, as well as using photography, all of which have also inspired his music and poetry.
His teachers first noticed his artistic talent, a blend between real and abstract, and encouraged him to develop his own distinctive artistic style. Nathan found inspiration in the works of greats like Salvador Dali and Stephen Wiltshire. The quote, ‘If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes’ by Andrew Carnegie gave him the encouragement to chase his dreams.
It took a couple of rejections to strengthen his resolve to not be known purely by his autistic diagnosis. Armed with his passion, paints, and graphite, Nathan has journeyed through multitudes of awards, accolades, and inspiring achievements, including winning the Tribute Award and Jack Petchey Award for Outstanding Achiever during his school years.
With over seven years of work already in his portfolio, Nathan’s aspirations to success include winning collaborations in the fields of arts, acting, music, and the entrepreneurial niche. His current focus in the arts is in anime and manga.
