CGTN: Ills of American Democracy – A Deep Scan

Beijing, China / TimesNewswire /  March 29, 2023 – This 30-minute CGTN special hosted by Liu Xin, “Ills of America Democracy”, exposes how the U.S. wreaked havoc worldwide in the name of a faulty democracy, which is nothing short of deadly genes.

20 years ago, the U.S invaded Iraq on the pretext of finding weapons of mass destruction and under the guise of bringing democracy to the country. To achieve their alleged goal, the U.S. used more than 2,600 tons depleted uranium (DU) bombs in Iraq, according to former Chinese Ambassador to Iraq Yang Honglin. The result is a devastating legacy of pollution and birth defects, among other problems.

Like bombs, the U.S. has been parachuting American-style democracy worldwide, but at home, its own democracy is in crisis. A January 2022 poll found that 64 percent of Americans believe U.S. democracy is “in crisis and at risk of failing.”

The genes of America’s democracy were tainted by bloody suppression from its inception. Prior to the arrival of white settlers in 1492, millions of Native Americans inhabited the land. However, by 1900, the population had dwindled to less than 250,000.

“All men are created equal,” the founding fathers declared in 1776, but they might have referred to white men only. As of now, minority groups continue to suffer systemic discrimination.

African Americans are still three times more likely to be killed by police than their white counterparts. The killing of George Floyd prompted nationwide protests, and news analyst Joseph Williams suggests that America’s obsession with guns is a crucial factor. Williams says: “Look at our movies, guns are…glorified.”

With blood and guns come money, big money. American Philosopher, Noam Chomsky nails it. “What happens when a Congressional Representative gets elected? First day in office, they start making phone calls to the potential donors for the next election coming up.”

Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow of the Asia Research Institute at National University of Singapore, goes further. “In recent times, clearly, the U.S. is not functioning as a democracy, it is functioning as an autocracy.”

And to cap it all, the media is often more concerned with serving financial interests and playing party politics in the U.S. After Pulitzer-prize-winning American journalist Seymour Hersh broke the story that the U.S. could be behind the Nord Stream sabotage, he was dismissed as “not credible” for citing one single source. “It’s not because they’re attacking me because of me in the sorts. They are attacking me because of what the story says,” Hersh says.

Who could be next? It’s obvious that the U.S. has beefed up the “democracy vs. authoritarianism” narrative. And this time the target seems to be China. With President Trump in the Oval Office, the ideological approach reared its ugly head again, together with the “China threat” drumbeat.

The Biden administration has rammed down people’s throat that the U.S. does not seek a new Cold War, and that it was not about containing or transforming China. But is that the reality?

When President Biden says he doesn’t seek a new Cold War, what he’s implicitly trying to say is that “I’m not responsible for the new Cold War” and that the Chinese are. So says John Mearsheimer, Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science Department at the University of Chicago.

How should a country advance its democratic values? People of the country are the ones to judge. Those who possess many flaws themselves have no credibility to lecture others.
