The crowd became densely packed at about 9:00 pm as a 30-minute timer counted down until the start of the concert. As the timer approached zero, attendees recall that it was getting increasingly harder to breathe as the crowd rocked forward and back as people continued to push forward to the front of the stage. Once the concert started, people were jumping up and down and as people started to fall they were unable to easily get back on their feet.

Concert goers and witnesses describe this experience as "chaotic and demonic" as people were struggling to breathe, passing out, falling, and getting trampled. People tried to get help from security and authorities, but cell service was weak and screams were muffled by the music.

"The crowd was squishing me so much that I felt like I couldn't breathe," Emily Munguia, 22, told CNN. "I started screaming for help ... I felt so scared like I was going to die."

One woman in the crowd, Madeline Eskins, recalls to CNN that some individuals who were in desperate need of help were able to be pulled to safety "over fences," like her. Others in the crowd were unable to walk or step.

Travis Scott never cancelled the show and concluded his full set between 10:13-10:15 pm.

First responders and law enforcement first got the call of a "mass casualty event" and dispatched about 28 units of various law enforcement to respond at 9:37 pm.

There are several videos and evidence of Travis Scott pausing the show to acknowledge there was someone passed out in the crowd and "they need help" at 9:42 pm. Then continuing to perform. Throughout the videos of the concert, you can hear the crowd chanting "stop the show."

In the wake of this tragedy, protocol, regulations, and alerts were either not well-thought-out, or not followed by Astroworld - the owner of the concert venue, and the concert promoter - Live Nation. Both parties bear joint responsibility for every tragic death or injury which occurred at the concert event.

Travis Scott concerts often encourage fans to show unruly behavior, such as mosh pits, crowd surfing, stage diving, bypassing security, and overcrowding the stage; multiple safety precautions went wrong to result in eight deaths.

Officials are continuing to investigate what went wrong at the 2021 Astroworld Festival. As more videos come to light, they are continuing to review concert protocols and interviewing witnesses to determine what happened. Based on the previous injuries at the 2019 Astroworld Fest and other Travis Scott concerts, the investigation is likely to focus on security and safety protocols, and what acts encouraged this behavior.

Live Nation, the producer of the 2021 Astroworld Festival, has previously had lawsuits regarding safety violations due to unsafe conditions at venues. The company has previously faced both federal scrutiny and lawsuits that involved multiple injuries and safety issues.

According to reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Live Nation Worldwide and Live Nation Entertainment were cited and fined for 10 violations spanning from 2016 to 2019 alone.
