Arius Technology Pioneers New Possibilities of the Future of Digital Conservation with High-Resolution Scan of Piero della Francesca's Fresco in Sansepolcro, Italy
SANSEPOLCRO, ITALY, December 23, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Arius Technology, the global leader in ultra-high-resolution 3D scanning and digitization of fine art, is proud to announce its latest cultural heritage project: the digitization of the fresco, The Resurrection, by Renaissance artist and mathematical master Piero della Francesca. In partnership with the Comune di Sansepolcro, Italy, owner of the Museo Civico 'Piero della Francesca,' Arius will utilize its groundbreaking color accurate technology to scan the surface detail of the centuries-old fresco, marking a significant milestone in the realm of digitized art and cultural conservation.
Recognized by art historians as one of the greatest works of Western art, The Resurrection will be captured in extraordinary detail using Arius's proprietary scanning technology. The process will involve conservation-grade scanning that will safely and accurately record the fresco's surface texture and color with extreme precision down to 10 microns to create highly detailed digital records (ADMF ™) for purposes of conservation, study, and restoration.
"Piero della Francesca's The Resurrection is not only a cultural treasure for Italy, but for the entire world," said Paul Lindahl, CEO of Arius Technology. "Our technology captures the full dimensionality and detail of the original work, transporting it into the digital world to ensure its legacy lives on and is accessible, secure, and ready for the next era of cultural engagement."
Arius's technology captures both 3D surface geometry and color, creating a data-rich file that can serve a wide range of purposes, from conservation analysis to museum-grade reproductions to digital files that can be stored on the blockchain. This marks a pivotal step forward in the long-term preservation of frescoes, which are particularly vulnerable to environmental and structural degradation.
This project will take place under a long-term partnership with the Comune di Sansepolcro, Italy, the hometown of Piero della Francesca. "The involvement of the Municipality of Sansepolcro—first in Italy to adopt this technology—in this globally pioneering project," notes art historian Luca Baroni, "highlights the strength of local Italian institutions, custodians of extraordinary treasures from the past that must not only be preserved, but also nurtured and allowed to grow for the future."
Fabrizio Innocenti, Mayor of Sansepolcro, reflects on this collaboration: "We are particularly proud to have embarked on a journey with Arius that allows us to enhance our very important artistic and cultural heritage through the use of cutting-edge and futuristic technology. In this sense, we feel we are honouring the legacy of Piero, defined as 'the most modern among the ancients.' The digitization of The Resurrection is part of Arius Technology's broader initiative to collaborate with cultural institutions in Italy and around the world, providing tools that bridge art history, technology, and public engagement, all while championing accessibility.
