Access to timely, evidence-based addiction treatment remains limited in many parts of Eastern North Carolina. Long wait times, restricted service availability, and insurance barriers often delay care at critical moments. Eastern Carolina Psychiatry and Mental Health is working to address these challenges by expanding comprehensive addiction treatment services designed to meet patients when they are ready for help.
The clinic now offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and integrated psychiatric care for individuals struggling with opioid, alcohol, and stimulant use disorders. Same-week appointments are available for new patients, reducing delays that can otherwise discourage individuals from pursuing care.
"Addiction doesn't wait, and neither should treatment," said Dr. Daniel Tan, Medical Director at Eastern Carolina Psychiatry and Mental Health. "When someone reaches the point where they're ready to get help, that window is important. Our goal is to make care available at that moment."
Eastern Carolina Psychiatry provides both in-person and telehealth appointments, allowing patients to choose the format that best fits their needs. Virtual visits are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms and offer a confidential option for individuals who face transportation challenges, work constraints, or concerns about privacy.
The clinic's addiction treatment model focuses on long-term stability rather than short-term intervention. Services include comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management using FDA-approved treatments, and ongoing follow-up care to support sustained recovery.
A central component of the clinic's approach is the treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions, commonly referred to as dual diagnosis. Many individuals with substance use disorders also experience depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other psychiatric conditions.
"Addiction rarely exists in isolation," Dr. Tan said. "Substance use is often closely tied to underlying mental health symptoms. Addressing both at the same time allows us to provide more complete and effective care."
Medication-assisted treatment combines medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone with behavioral therapies and clinical monitoring. Research has consistently shown that MAT improves treatment retention, reduces relapse risk, and supports patients in maintaining employment, relationships, and daily responsibilities.
Eastern Carolina Psychiatry accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, Medicare, Alliance Health, and Trillium Health Resources. The clinic places a strong emphasis on creating a respectful, nonjudgmental care environment, with staff trained to provide clear communication and consistent follow-up.
"Recovery is possible, and it starts with access," Dr. Tan added. "Our role is to be here when people are ready—and to support them through every stage of that process."
