Promethean Clinic in downtown Vancouver is seeing a steady increase in patients seeking corrective treatments for complications from unregulated aesthetic procedures performed by unlicensed providers.
The trend comes as regulatory bodies crack down on unauthorized cosmetic injection services being advertised through social media platforms. Recent court cases have highlighted the severe consequences of unregulated aesthetic work, including tissue damage, infections, and permanent deformities requiring medical intervention.
"Unfortunately, we have seen patients here at the clinic to correct problems from unqualified injectors," said Parveen Sangha, a licensed nurse practitioner and the medical director of Promethean Clinic, in a recent interview with CBC News.
Sangha brings seven years of family medicine experience and previously served as Medical Director for Vancouver Coastal Health programs and as President of the NP Council for the Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC. She emphasized that cosmetic injectables carry significant medical risks when administered improperly.
"They come with a lot of risks – scary risks," Sangha told CBC. "If they are injected incorrectly, it could go into an artery, which can cause a blockage and lead to tissue death, permanent blindness, infection and scarring in some of the worst scenarios."
The Rise of Underground Aesthetic Services
The accessibility of social media has created an unregulated marketplace for aesthetic procedures. Unlicensed practitioners advertise services including dermal fillers, neurotoxins, and body contouring treatments through Instagram and other platforms, often using professional-sounding titles that mislead consumers about their qualifications.
Recent legal actions by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC underscore the severity of the problem. Court documents detail cases where unlicensed providers used unapproved products and advised patients to obtain antibiotics under false pretenses, resulting in serious medical complications requiring hospital treatment.
According to the BC Ministry of Health, only specific regulated health professionals can legally administer cosmetic injectables: physicians regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, registered nurses regulated by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, naturopathic doctors regulated by the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC, and dentists for Botox only.
What Patients Should Look For
Sangha stressed that legitimate providers follow strict protocols that unlicensed operators typically skip.
"Licensed providers should offer clients a thorough consultation, where they review the individual's medical history, discuss possible complications and sign consent forms," she explained, nothing that as a Nurse Practitioner regulated by the BCCNM, her practice is held to the same diagnostic and prescribing standards as a physician.
Qualified practitioners must also be able to prescribe medications, properly assess and diagnose complications, and refer patients to specialists like plastic surgeons when necessary.
"Anyone can call themselves an expert injector on social media," Sangha noted.
Promethean Clinic's Correction Services
Promethean Clinic has developed expertise in managing complications from improperly administered aesthetic treatments. The clinic's medical team, which includes Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Registered Nurses, uses advanced techniques to address issues including:
- Vascular occlusions from improper filler placement
- Asymmetry and overfilling requiring dissolution
- Nodule formation from incorrect product use
- Tissue damage from unapproved substances
- Migration of improperly placed fillers
The clinic maintains medical-grade emergency protocols and keeps hyaluronidase on hand to immediately dissolve problematic hyaluronic acid fillers if vascular complications occur.
Medical-Grade Standards
Located at 1111 W Georgia St in downtown Vancouver, Promethean Clinic was purpose-built for medical procedures with seven treatment rooms, two consultation rooms, and a dedicated IV therapy lounge. The facility maintains strict sterile protocols and uses only Health Canada approved products.
All injectable treatments are performed by licensed medical professionals who have completed extensive training in facial anatomy, injection technique, and complication management.
Industry Warning Signs
Promethean Clinic advises consumers to watch for red flags that indicate unlicensed providers:
- Services advertised primarily through social media without proper clinic information
- Prices significantly below market rates for legitimate medical services
- Lack of proper consultation or medical history review
- No discussion of potential complications or consent forms
- Inability to show professional licensing or credentials
- Treatments performed in non-medical settings like homes or hotel rooms
- Pressure to purchase additional services or products during procedures
Cost of Correction
Corrective procedures often cost significantly more than the original unauthorized treatment while requiring multiple sessions to address complications. Some damage, including scarring and tissue necrosis, may be permanent despite medical intervention.
Promethean Clinic emphasizes that prevention through choosing qualified providers from the start remains far more effective than attempting corrections after problems develop.
