Coastal Medical Transportation Systems Announces Agreement to Expand Ambulance Network

Transformative Healthcare Deal Poised to Make a Substantial and Immediate Impact Within the Regional Medical Transportation Landscape

Coastal Medical Transportation Systems (CMTS), a privately owned and operated medical transportation company dedicated to providing the highest quality of care with compassion, dignity and respect for customers and their patients, and Transformative Healthcare, today announced they have reached an agreement to acquire Transformative Healthcare’s Massachusetts medical transportation arm, comprised of Fallon Ambulance Service and LifeLine Ambulance Service. These two organizations will become a part of CMTS’ expanding medical transportation portfolio. Employees from each organization will be integrated into the CMTS team. This acquisition will make CMTS one of the largest ambulance networks in the state by both geographic reach and number of patients served.

“The Coastal family is excited to welcome Fallon and LifeLine Ambulance Service's valued employees and medical transportation customers into our organization,” said Alex Theoharidis, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Medical Transportation Systems. “This acquisition has afforded us an opportunity to not only expand our services portfolio, but also the scale of our capabilities in order to close gaps in care delivery across the region. With this strategic move, we believe we are in an even stronger position to support our mission. We are committed to providing great care, a superior work environment and innovative technology and equipment, which — when combined — provide a more efficient and effective operation and as a result, a higher-quality provider and patient experience.”

The investment comes on the heels of another recent CMTS expansion effort that effectively doubled the size of their service to the region in the past year. The team opened new operation centers in both Plymouth and Brockton, added more than 100 field providers and a new, state-of-the-art call center, and increased the overall size of their vehicle fleet by 100%.

The addition of the Transformative Healthcare medical transportation operation will expand the CMTS service area to collectively cover the Cape and the Islands, South Shore, Boston Metro, and Central Massachusetts regions. In addition to growing the service area, the acquisition increases the overall size of the team, bringing the total number of employees in the CMTS team to 1,000 with a fleet of 213 ambulances. The combination of services will also create additional benefits due to scale, including a 50% increase in backup resource availability on day one.

A paramedic by trade, Theoharidis founded CMTS nearly 10 years ago, bringing to the organization a unique professional perspective having worked directly on the frontlines of healthcare transportation. In just three years he grew the company from only three employees to a team of 120. He also brings to the company extensive healthcare entrepreneurial experience having served as president and CEO of Acuity Link, a communication platform that links hospitals and healthcare institutions with non-emergency medical transportation providers and ambulance crew members for all levels of care, and Mobile Healthcare Services, LLC.

“For the last several years, the people of Transformative Healthcare have worked hard to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Commonwealth’s healthcare system," said Charles T. Lelon, Chairman of Transformative Healthcare. “Our successes included the rapid, statewide scaling of mobile health service delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has positioned Transformative Healthcare to expand its mobile healthcare service offerings and broader logistical management solutions. As we focus on that expansion, we are pleased to take this step with Coastal, a complementary, Massachusetts-owned, and fast-growing medical transportation service, to ensure continuity for both our people and our customers.”

Current customers of CMTS and Transformative Healthcare will enjoy full continuity of service. In addition, they will benefit from elevated transport resource availability and increased patient capacity, as well as the expanded service area.
