Preserving Youngstown: U-Haul Shares Plans for Historic Ward Bakery

U-Haul® is unveiling plans to expand self-storage options in Youngstown with the acquisition of the historic Ward Bakery building at 1024 Mahoning Ave.

The 101-year-old building, now U-Haul Storage of Youngstown, was purchased July 22. It will be operated remotely by parent store U-Haul Moving & Storage of Youngstown, just across the street.

Renovations are scheduled to be completed by spring 2025.

U-Haul Company’s Adaptive Reuse program will be implemented to refurbish the property while constructing up to 800 climate-controlled storage units with high-end security features. The building’s exterior will be preserved to maintain as much of the original character as possible.

This is the second U-Haul adaptive reuse project in the city. The former Isaly’s Dairy plant is now U-Haul Moving & Storage of Youngstown.

“We are honored to preserve a second piece of Youngstown’s past while giving it a new purpose,” stated Alissa Nider, U-Haul Company of Akron president. “Our customers needed more self-storage options, so we are thrilled to provide another Adaptive Reuse property that can accommodate the growth we are seeing in northeast Ohio.”

To secure self-storage at this and other facilities, download the U-Haul app or contact Reservations at 1-800-GO-UHAUL.

Nider intends to hire up to six Team Members to support the new store. U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote job growth in the Youngstown community. U-Haul, honored as a Best for Vets employer by The Military Times, actively recruits veterans and gives them preference in the hiring process. Find U-Haul careers at uhauljobs.com.

Acquisition of the Ward Bakery was driven by U-Haul Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. The adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
