The dynamic and evolving world of Indian hip-hop takes center stage in the new web series How To Make It In Mumbai, a groundbreaking project co-created by Jay Kila and Tarun Hansen. This series, a blend of sharp satire and vibrant storytelling, is set to premiere on YouTube, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of culture, identity, and ambition in the modern music scene.

How To Make It In Mumbai follows the story of Jay Kila, a New York-based rapper who relocates to Mumbai to explore his ancestral roots and break into the Indian hip-hop scene. The series, with its tone reminiscent of Silicon Valley and Atlanta, delves into Kila's journey as he navigates a path filled with unexpected challenges, cultural nuances, and self-discovery.

The narrative takes a satirical look at the trials of an artist striving for success while grappling with the complexities of cultural identity in a globalized world. The series poignantly raises questions about authenticity and the impact of Western influences on India's rapidly evolving cultural landscape.

Created by Jay Kila, a Stanford University graduate and hip-hop artist living in Mumbai, and Tarun Hansen, a Carnegie Mellon alum and film writer/producer based in Los Angeles, the series is rooted in real experiences. The first season was developed remotely over the summer of 2023, drawing inspiration from experiences Kila & Hansen had working on music videos in India.

Breaking traditional molds, How To Make It In Mumbai experiments with a novel format, featuring episodes that are just 3-4 minutes long. This decision, along with opting to release the series on YouTube rather than through subscription streaming services, reflects the creators' commitment to maintaining creative control and connecting directly with their audience.

The production of the first season was a collaborative effort, supported by private investors from both India and the US. The series is notable for featuring cameos from popular Desi influencers and Mumbai hip-hop artists, making it one of the first narrative shows to delve into the Indian hip-hop scene post Gully Boy.

"We wanted to create a series that not only entertains but also sparks conversation about the complexities of cultural identity in today's interconnected world," said Jay Kila. ‘How To Make It In Mumbai is a labor of love that we hope resonates with anyone who's ever chased a dream."

The series premiered on Dec 1st on https://www.youtube.com/@HowToMakeItInMumbai. For more information and updates, follow How To Make It In Mumbai on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/howtomakeitinmumbai
