Discovering the Beauty of Hakka Enclosed Houses in Shixing

By: Get News

Shixing is a “millennium-old county” in China, also known as the “Hometown of Chinese Enclosed House Culture.” This area boasts 249 well-preserved Hakka enclosed houses, each rich in historical memory and cultural significance. These structures not only document the historical changes in Shixing but also showcase the profound essence and connotation of Hakka culture, making them a valuable cultural heritage of China and the world.

Architecture is the stone book of history, an immortal art left by the ancients. The ancient enclosed houses of Shixing embody the historical mark of the Hakka ancestors who traveled from the Central Plains to northern Guangdong, enduring hardships to open up the land. Some were built with the immense wealth accumulated over generations, some embodied the ingenious ideas of countless craftsmen, and some were painstakingly constructed by the Hakka people with a "move mountains like the Foolish Old Man" spirit to create livable land.

The grandeur of Shixing’s enclosed houses is exemplified by the large Hakka Enclosed house, Mantang Hakka Dayuan. Inside this vast structure are 9 halls, 12 courtyards, 28 wells, and 777 rooms, making it the largest Hakka enclosed house in Guangdong Province, renowned as the “First Grand Enclosed House in Lingnan” and the “Top Residential Building in Northern Guangdong.” With a construction area of over 34,000 square meters and a total of 777 rooms, it resembles a small kingdom.

On July 13th, the opening ceremony of the “New Chapter in Shixing: Reviving the enclosed houses” 2024 Guangdong (Shaoguan Shixing) Enclosed House Cultural Tourism Week was launched in Shixing. A highlight of the event was the release of the “New Era Revival Plan for Shixing’s enclosed houses.” Shixing County announced to the world its ambitious blueprint for implementing the “Hundred-Enclosed House Renovation,” “Hundred-Enclosed House Scenic Spots,” “Hundred-Enclosed House Exhibitions,” “Hundred-Enclosed House Theater,” and “Hundred-Enclosed House Works” projects. The goal is to rejuvenate Shixing’s enclosed houses, turning them into a vibrant cultural landmark of China.

On the same day, a unique intangible cultural heritage fashion show took place under the embrace of Changwei, a nationally protected key cultural relic in China. Beautiful models seemed to step out of time, showcasing exquisite clothing such as Hanfu and Xiangyunsha. Designers used the ancient Hakka enclosed houses as their stage, skillfully blending traditional intangible cultural heritage with modern fashion design, giving new life and vitality to the ancient enclosed house cultural heritage on the fashion stage.

In recent years, Shixing has been promoting the integration of various industries, including ecological health tourism, forest tourism, hot spring tourism, nature education, mountain sports, and ecological camping. These efforts continue to highlight its tourism brand names such as “Millennium-Old County,” “Hometown of Jiu Ling,” “Hometown of enclosed houses,” “Ecological Pearl,” “Hot Spring Resort,” and “Fruit and Vegetable Paradise,” attracting more people to learn about, yearn for, and visit Shixing.

Shixing welcomes you! Come and explore the beauty of the enclosed houses, the soul of the Hakka people, and the ancient charm that has lasted for a thousand years!
