The Chocolate Llama Cake Company, a high-end Houston-based cake shop looking to expand with a commercial build-out, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raising funds to bring the project to life.
Rated as one of the top-ranked wedding vendors in the state of Texas, The Chocolate Llama has been cooking up innovative artisan treats that have to be seen to be believed. From wedding cakes that required a ladder to life-like character designs, the bakery’s positive word-of-mouth has propelled the local business and the company is now seeking to secure funding for a new commercial building to support the growth.
“In the past four years the business has grown beyond what I could have imagined. At first, I thought it would be stellar if I could do a few celebration cakes and a wedding cake each month. Now, I average four to six weddings a month, and have lost count of the celebration cakes. We are so busy that we unfortunately must turn down cake opportunities daily. My kitchen is overflowing with racks, pans, mixers, paintbrushes, too many other things to list, and the guest bedroom is now storage,” says owner and Executive Cake Artisan Kellie Herrod on the inspiration behind the project. “We’ve found the perfect spot that will allow us to take better care of more clients. We're working on the buildout now. It will have a fab tasting room, spacious bakery and separate area for carpentry and building armature—think structural support for a T-rex or an oil derrick that gushes milk chocolate.”
Herrod previously worked as a faux finisher for 20 years, specializing in murals and specialty plaster wall finishes. She started baking cakes 17 years ago when her niece was adopted at the age of 2 and she vowed to make her a birthday cake every year. With each new year the cakes became more elaborate and this cake journey eventually led her to founding The Chocolate Llama.
“There’s a cake cliché we’ve heard many times “The cake was pretty, but it tasted terrible”. That is absolutely NOT the case with The Chocolate Llama! Not only are our cakes beautiful (the photos speak for themselves), but we care deeply about what goes into each cake. We’re not too proud to say our cakes are ridiculously delicious!” adds Herrod.
