Diagonal Media (DGNL) Wraps Production on Animated Voting Rights PSA

NYC-based Creative Agency, DGNL, wraps production on Harlem Independent Living Center’s animated voting PSA for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community.

NY, NY – June 16 – Diagonal Media (DGNL), an NYC-based Creative Agency collaborated with animation Youtube star (750K+ subscribers)/ AMPAS member, animator Patrick Smith (Walt Disney, MTV); Jonathan Lamberton – a Deaf interpreter featured in The Times; and viral comedian/writer Max St John, to complete production on an animated voting PSA for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Harlem Independent Living Center (HILC) Executive Director Christina Curry hired Diagonal Media to produce the video, she is also a member of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

The PSA will be released prior to the midterm elections fast approaching on November 8th, 2022. The animated video will focus on the voting rights of people who are deaf and hard of hearing. For example, they have the right to request an interpreter two weeks ahead of the election date and receive an interpreter from the state. They are also allowed to bring materials that will help facilitate their voting, into the voting booth with them.

Jonathan Lamberton gave DGNL the signing reference for the animated video. Jonathan and his partner Andrea Alefhi are interpreters for the Deaf community and received national media attention after a televised job with New York City’s Office of Emergency Management.

Leslie King, DGNL’s producer on the project said, “We really wanted to work with Jon because he is also a member of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Jon was able to give us feedback as to what was gonna work and what wasn’t. We completely trust him as he’s been doing this in the media for a very long time.”

Lamberton’s personal experiences strongly influence his perspective on the importance of this video. He reflects that “As a Deaf person, I know the importance of having full access to information to educate myself, to promote democracy and in every facet of life.” He continued, “Too often, vital information is not accessible to the Deaf community because it has not been translated into ASL. Closed captioning is not an equitable option for those who are not fluent in reading English. I hope this video will speak to our diverse Deaf community in NYC and result in greater voting participation.”

Diagonal Media worked closely with HILC’s Curry to create a video that will help speak to the diverse Deaf community in NY.

“HILC is really excited to have this animated video on voting rights in ASL for the Deaf community. Although there are 200,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing New Yorkers, the voting record is rather low,” said Curry. “Not because of disinterest but due to a continued lack of access to information. This video is a short reminder to the community about their Rights and the need to vote.”
