Children’s author Chris Husband has released Maude’s Magical Ear Trumpet, a rhyming picture book for readers aged four to nine that explores listening, empathy and kindness through the story of an older woman who discovers a surprising new way to understand those around her.
Published by Grand Publishers and available in hardback, paperback and ebook formats on Amazon and various retailers, the book follows Maude, a cheerful elderly woman who is given an old-fashioned ear trumpet by her doctor. While it appears to help her hear better, Maude soon realises the trumpet reveals something deeper, helping her recognise unspoken worries, emotions and needs in others.
Husband says the story was written in response to a wider social challenge. “We live in a world where many people are talking, but not always listening,” he said. “This book is a gentle way to show children, and adults too, that listening, sharing and helping can make everyday interactions kinder and more meaningful.”
The book addresses themes including empathy, ageing, hearing loss and intergenerational understanding. Through Maude’s interactions with family members, shopkeepers and friends, the story suggests that age is no barrier to learning or self-reflection, and that compassion is a skill that can be practised at any stage of life.
Maude’s Magical Ear Trumpet is intended for shared reading at home and in classroom or library settings. Its rhyming structure supports early literacy, while its themes align with social and emotional learning discussions for young readers.
Husband has previously published several children’s and adult poetry collections. Alongside his writing, he works as an IT consultant and regularly visits schools and community groups as a storyteller. He is also a member of the Lancashire Poetry Relay Team, which performs poetry and music in libraries and senior citizen venues.
