Jonesborough, TN – Appalachian Community Federal Credit Union (ACFCU) has opened a branch in Jonesborough, TN. ACFCU brings a unique combination to Tennessee’s oldest town: a full slate of financial products and services and a mission to reach underserved populations.
The branch, at 1000 W. Jackson Blvd. Suite 10, opened in early February and is staffed by Branch Manager, Leslie Ellis and Financial Services Officer, Lyndsi McCurry, both of whom are Washington County, TN natives.

With the addition of its Jonesborough location, ACFCU, which has more than 16,000 members, now has eight branches across northeast Tennessee, southwest Virginia and southeast Kentucky. A non-profit, member-owned financial cooperative, the credit union offers free checking, deposit and investment services, personal, commercial and business lending – all with competitive rates supported by top-notch personal service.
“We’ve had our eye on Jonesborough for some time,” Scott said. “We have a number of members in the vicinity, and we’re very impressed with the town’s growth and its vision for the future.”
Appalachian Community Federal Credit Union also features a robust mortgage lending department that, like its other departments, integrates the credit union’s role as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) into its product offerings and approach. ACFCU’s mission is to provide community and economic development to underserved individuals and businesses who lack adequate access to capital, high quality financial services and financial coaching. CDFIs, created in the 1990s to address lack of access to capital investments for small business and overreliance by families on payday lenders and check-cashing outlets, have a similar focus.
Indeed, ACFCU enters the Jonesborough market on a roll when it comes to community impact. A $2.1 million grant awarded in March 2017 has helped more than 110 low and moderate-income families become homeowners (each has received $10,500 in assistance). Another grant for nearly $1 million, announced in September 2017, will allow ACFCU and partners to continue opening homeownership opportunities for people who might otherwise be shut out of the process. Hundreds of people saw their credit scores improve with the help of ACFCU’s financial coaching and workshops in 2017. Hundreds more chose ACFCU as an affordable alternative to predatory title and payday lenders.
“We know that along with people who are financially thriving, the Jonesborough area also has people who have encountered financial difficulties or are simply trying to make ends meet on limited income,” Scott said. “With our financial coaching resources, our down payment assistance opportunities and other products and services designed to help people stair step their way to better financial health, we hope to help make the overall community stronger.”
ACFCU has already begun supporting the community. It is a premier sponsor of “I Am Home,” a play chronicling the lives of town residents. Scott said the credit union plans to maintain an active presence within Jonesborough.
