Roppelt grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn. "I spent a lot of summer afternoons in old Municipal Stadium," he said. "Looking back on the history of the Indians I thought wow, this team is cursed. But the city seemed cursed for a long time, too. So I decided to write a supernatural novel about both the city and the team."
Set in 1995 just after the Indians' World Series loss, Mortal Foe takes readers through Cleveland and its neighborhoods while chilling their spines. Roppelt also draws parallels between the histories of the city and its ball club.
"I wanted to make the city into its own character as much as possible," he said. "When I looked back to the last Indians' World Series win in 1948 and tracked the fortunes of the city, I thought yeah, I can make this work."
The Best Book Awards competition is now in its 16th year. It is one of the largest mainstream book award competitions in the United States.

Though he now resides in northern Illinois, Roppelt considers himself a dual citizen. "I love where I am, but I'll always love Cleveland, too," he said. He is currently working on a sequel to Mortal Foe, as well as planning other projects.
