Local Counseling Group Ensures That Vulnerable Demographics Are Not Without Food, Supply, and Behavioral Health Resources

LAS VEGAS - May 1, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

In the middle of indefinite separation, this pandemic has begun to bring us all together in ways we could have never imagined. Desert Rose Counseling Group has paired with two unlikely connections to ensure that one of our most vulnerable demographics is not without food, supply, and behavioral health resources, in this time of great need.

On April 17, 2020, Desert Rose Counseling Group, partnered with Foster Kinship, will give away 1,100 pounds of protein to those Kinship Care Families, in need. This event was made possible by the generous donation of Newport Meats of Nevada, a Sysco Company.

Kinship Care refers to the more than 33,000 children in Nevada who are being parented by their relatives. Children who enter into the care of relatives often do so for the same reasons they might enter into foster care, because their parents are unable or unfit to care for them. Kinship caregivers are a natural resource for vulnerable children, with many caring for children who’ve experienced trauma from experiencing abuse, neglect, and parental loss.

Desert Rose Counseling Group (DR) is a champion in the space of suicide prevention. DR is a leading provider of integrated behavioral health services, via its outpatient clinic connected to Foster Kinship's resource center. During COVID-19 impact, DR is continuing to offer crisis stabilization; environmental, and therapeutic interventions to mitigate the risk of suicide. Counseling and peer support services remain accessible to the public, via telehealth.

"Kinship families who were vulnerable before the pandemic are now in very precarious situations," said Alison Caliendo, Director of Foster Kinship. "If not for the generosity of our community, many of our caregivers would choose to go hungry so their children can eat. That's why these partnerships are so critical now more than ever."
